  • The fast-growing hybrid Leyland cypress (Cupressus × leylandii), much used in gardens, draws one of its parents from this genus (Cupressus macrocarpa, Monterey cypress); the other parent, Callitropsis nootkatensis (Nootka cypress), is also sometimes classified in this genus, or else in the separate genus Xanthocyparis, but in the past more usually in Chamaecyparis.
  • The Leyland cypress, Cupressus × leylandii, × Cuprocyparis leylandii or × Cupressocyparis leylandii, often referred to simply as leylandii, is a fast-growing coniferous evergreen tree much used in horticulture, primarily for hedges and screens.
  • While developing the gardens and landscaping at Haggeston, Christopher Leyland was sent by his brother John, six Cupressocyparis × leylandii, a hybrid tree that was the result of spontaneous cross-pollination at Leighton Hall in 1888 when the female flowers or cones of Nootka cypress (Cupressus nootkatensis) were fertilised by pollen from Monterey cypress (Cupressus macrocarpa).
  • Specimens of interest include Abies nebrodensis, Calocedrus decurrens, Cedrus libani, Chamaecyparis lawsoniana, Chamaecyparis nootkatensis, Cupressocyparis leylandii, Larix decidua, Metasequoia glyptostroboides, Pinus sylvestris, Prunus subhirtella, and Quercus petraea.
  • Several hedges were planted, the most noticeable along Greenup Street; cypress (×Cupressocyparis leylandii), and several smaller sections scattered throughout the garden; woodland hawthorn (Crataegus laevigata), yellow jasmine (Jasminum fruticans) and pink may bush (Spiraea × bumalda).
